Earth Day is April 22 each year, and this day is a reminder to be conscious of environmental issues and take steps to address them as we go about our lives. You may hear the phrase "Make Everyday Earth Day," but what are some actionable changes that busy families can make so it's a reality? Believe it or not, there's a lot we can do right in our own homes, starting with our appliances. This month, we're talking with Chad, Sales Manager and Appliance Expert here at Judd & Black. He's sharing information on energy-efficient appliances (and rebates!), the ENERGY STAR program, and tips for using your appliances to save energy and water.
What features do manufacturers use in energy-efficient appliances?
Chad: Appliance technology has advanced greatly since your last purchase, including updates in energy efficiency. Today, it's common to find features like smart controls that allow you to check appliance use remotely, improved insulation materials, and designs that help appliances keep cool or warm air more effectively, reducing the energy needed to keep the proper temperature.
Today's dishwashers are incredibly efficient. Cycles use only a few gallons of water, and pre-rinsing isn't necessary. Some washers and dryers use steam technology to clean clothes at lower temperatures, saving water and energy. Electric dryers that use heat pumps repeatedly recycle the same hot air, making them more efficient than traditional dryers. Many appliances also have built-in settings designed to use less water or power. Features like "eco-wash" cycles on washing machines and dishwashers or "eco-mode" settings on refrigerators can help you make an impact over time without sacrificing cleaning power or food quality.
What are ENERGY STAR appliances?
Chad: Appliances that meet criteria defined by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) can earn ENERGY STAR certification and the recognizable yellow label, which means they are designed to be more energy efficient than standard models. Typically, these appliances use 10% to 50% less energy and water. For example:
- Refrigerators: At least 15% better than the minimum federal standard
- Washers: Criteria are water use per cubic foot of laundry capacity and energy use per cycle.
- Dishwashers: Criteria are for water consumption and energy use per cycle.
Since it began in 1992, the ENERGY STAR program's environmental impact savings are estimated to be:
- Electricity: 5 trillion kilowatt-hours
- Energy costs: More than $500 billion
- Greenhouse Gas Emissions: 4 billion metric tons
Upgrading to energy-efficient appliances can reduce your environmental footprint and put money back in your pocket by saving some on your utility bills. While the exact amount saved depends on the appliances, how you use them, and energy costs in your area, ENERGY STAR estimates an average household can save $345 per year by switching. Judd & Black is proud to offer you many ENERGY STAR-certified products. Please let us know if you have questions about these appliances or their labeling.
What Energy Star-rated appliances are you loving right now?
Chad: We have many brands with great Energy Star products, including Whirlpool, Maytag, JennAir, GE and others. Right now, the GE Profile™ 4.8 Cu. Ft. Carbon Graphite Washer Dryer Combo has my attention. It's great because it's an all-in-one washer and dryer unit that finishes a load in about 2 hours. It uses ventless heat pump technology that is 50% more energy efficient at drying than standard electric dryers. Plus, right now, there is a GE Profile $200 Smarter Cleaning rebate offer available (through 6/5/24.)
When Judd & Black delivers a new appliance, do you haul away the old one?
Chad: When your new appliance is delivered, we'll gladly haul away the old appliance for you for a fee. We love providing this service because the appliance isn't just sent to the landfill; it gets recycled through a partner in Snohomish County, Appliance Recycling Outlet. You can also drop off your old appliance for a fee at several of our locations, including Everett, Mt Vernon, Marysville, and Bellingham.
Do you have any bonus tips for using current appliances more efficiently?
Chad: Being energy efficient doesn't require a complete appliance overhaul; there are plenty of ways to use your existing appliances in a more Earth-friendly way to "Make Everyday Earth Day." Here are a few tips.
- In the laundry room, try washing clothes with cold water whenever possible, as heating the water uses a lot of energy. Run washing machines only with full loads to reduce the number of cycles needed.
- In the kitchen, keep your refrigerator clean (including the coils and air intake!) and defrost it; this will allow it to cool more effectively and use less energy. There's no need to pre-rinse your dishes; modern dishwashers are designed to clean dirty dishes without pre-washing. Finally, consider air drying your dishes instead of using the dishwasher's drying cycle. While it may take longer for dishes to dry completely, this can be an energy saver.
